Rhythmic

Want to take part in an Olympic sport? Perfect for those who love dance…

Rhythmic gymnastics is all about performing mesmerising routines on the floor – just the gymnast, the music and their apparatus.

Providing participation opportunities for individual or groups, Rhythmic gymnastics is the perfect sport for those with a penchant for dance and movement to music, where personality and expression can be nurtured over the following pieces of apparatus: ball, ribbon, clubs, hoop and rope – with ‘free’ floor exercise also included at lower level competitions.

Flexibility and musical interpretation – with a little bit of risk!

Heavily influenced by ballet and modern dance, Rhythmic gymnasts amaze audiences with their astonishing skill as they execute enormously difficult apparatus handling. Flexibility and musical interpretation are important elements in a Rhythmic exercise. However it is the amount of risk a gymnast takes, often with seemingly impossible throws – that sets the routines apart from other disciplines.

Rhythmic gymnastics at present is predominantly a female sport in most countries and at elite level competitions. However male Rhythmic gymnastics is emerging and growing, especially in Spain and Japan, so it is only a matter of time before male rhythmic gymnastics becomes more widely available and recognised. In the UK male rhythmic gymnasts can train and gain access to a few non NDP competitions.

The aim of Rhythmic gymnastics is to captivate the audience with pure artistry of movement, creativity, precision and skill, while executing their moves. Rhythmic gymnasts perform with equipment, rather than on equipment.

No experience necessary!

At Horizon, you don’t need experience to get started, but a love of dance and creativity goes a long way! Rhythmic gymnasts at Horizon can train for fun or train to compete, with the competition pathway being easy and in gradual increasing difficulty levels.

Gymnasts from the age of 6 can begin their first steps by participating in the Next Steps Program, Core Proficiency Badge Program, NDP Grades and Club Competitions. With additional training hours, gymnasts can move through the clubs rhythmic development structure, and achieve higher levels of competition with imagination and determination being the only limitation to their gymnastic achievements.
